How much does a patio cover cost?

Published price ranges by size and type, plus the Elk Grove details that move your price up or down. These are estimates, not quotes.

Updated November 2, 2026

Most patio covers cost $4,500 to $12,000 installed. Angi's 2026 cost data puts the national average at about $8,500, and larger or more elaborate covers can reach $20,000 or more.

Per square foot, a cover over an existing patio runs about $20 to $60 installed according to HomeGuide, and up to $120 for a solid wood roof. A small lattice cover can come in near the bottom of that range. A large insulated or wood cover with new footings, fans and lights lands near the top.

So a quote above the lowest numbers you see online is normal, especially once the permit and engineering are included. Ask the installer to split the price into the cover, footings, permit and add-ons so you can compare quotes fairly.

What changes the price in Elk Grove

Permit and engineering

Attached covers need a city permit at any size, and the city asks for a structural design. The building fee is based on the size and value of the work.

Footings or the existing slab

A cover can sit on a 3½-inch slab only when each post carries 750 pounds or less. Heavier roofs need new footings, which adds digging and concrete.

How it attaches

Tying into stucco, a fascia board or the roof itself takes different hardware and labor. Two-story homes and tile roofs take more care.

Roof type

Lattice costs the least. Solid aluminum is in the middle. Insulated panels, solid wood and louvered roofs cost the most.

Electrical

Fans, lights, outlets and heaters need wiring and add to the permit. Planning them up front costs less than adding them later.

HOA requirements

If your HOA requires a certain color, style or set of drawings, that can add time and some cost before the city permit.

Add-ons

Add-onTypical cost
Lighting$200 – $1,000
Ceiling fans$300 – $800
Heaters$500 – $2,000
Gutters and drainage$500 – $1,500

Ranges from Angi's 2026 patio cover cost data. Angi also estimates wood cover upkeep at about $200 to $500 a year for sealing or staining.

How to compare patio cover quotes

  • Make sure each quote is for the same size, roof type and number of posts
  • Check that the permit, engineering and city fees are included, and who pulls the permit
  • Ask whether the price includes new footings or assumes your existing slab
  • Ask about the warranty on the materials and on the installation
  • Look up the contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov

California also limits the down payment on a home improvement contract to $1,000 or 10% of the price, whichever is less.

FAQ

Cost questions

Why is my quote higher than the national averages?

Averages blend small lattice covers with big solid ones, and many don't include engineering, permits or new footings. In Elk Grove, attached covers always need a permit and a structural design, and a larger or solid roof often needs new footings under the posts. Ask your installer to show those items on separate lines.

Does the price include the permit?

It should. Most installers pull the permit and include the city fees and any engineering in the quote. The City of Elk Grove bases its building fees on the size and value of the work, so ask for the permit to appear as its own line.

Is an insulated cover worth the extra cost?

On a west- or south-facing patio you use in summer, often yes. It's noticeably cooler underneath than a thin aluminum roof, it's quieter in the rain, and it can carry fans and lights. On a shady north-facing patio, a lattice or solid cover may be all you need.

Does Elk Grove Patios set the price?

No. We're a referral service. The installer sets the price and gives you a written quote after measuring. The figures on this page are published national estimates, not our prices or any installer's.
